Support Spring AI 2.x and Spring Boot 4.x #984

Open

Description

@mweiler-sap

Describe the Problem

Hi colleagues,

Spring Boot 3.x is now out of OSS support (only enterprise support is still available) as noted in the Spring Boot Documentation

Spring explicitly states we need to use Spring AI 2.x.x to be compatible with Spring Boot 4.x:

Spring Boot Version Compatibility:
Spring AI 2.x.x (main branch) - Spring Boot 4.x
Spring AI 1.1.x (1.1.x branch) - Spring Boot 3.5.x

from README: GitHub - spring-projects/spring-ai: An Application Framework for AI Engineering.

Could you please update this repo for compatibility with Spring Boot 4.x and therefore Spring AI 2.x?
It is increasingly becoming a blocker as more and more projects are migrating to Spring Boot 4.

Propose a Solution

    Hi @mweiler-sap,

    thanks for reaching out! We are aware of the situation and have a migration on our radar. I am unfortunately not able to give you a tangible timeline on this, though.

    For the time being, let me note that it is possible (for some use-cases at least) to run Spring Boot v4 together with Spring AI v1. We do this in our sample app.

    I will leave this ticket open as a tracker and reference also for other users who might have the same issue. We will notify you here once we have more info on a timeline for the migration.

    Best,
    Jonas

    Hi Jonas,
    our team would also very much be interested in a spring-boot-4 update. I'm not sure it's a good idea to suggest in your sample that the library is compatible with spring-boot-4 when it is unclear at which point things break.
    In our case, updating to spring-boot-4 does not work if we are trying to supply a custom BTP destination as documented here
    Root cause is that the HttpHeaders.remove() function has changed in spring 7 which is somewhere down the call chain.

    Hi Raphael, for transparency (and to reflect email communication here):

    AI SDK team recently released an early v2 version (alpha) of the SDK with desired updates:

    <dependency>
        <groupId>com.sap.ai.sdk</groupId>
        <artifactId>core</artifactId>
        <version>2.0.0-M1</version>
    </dependency>

    if your case is urgent, you can already start using this version.

    the tradeoff is that we still may make few potentially breaking changes in v2.

    we are actively working on this topic and it is our current top priority
