Hello GitHub Education Support Team, I am writing to you regarding the rejection of my GitHub Faculty benefits renewal. I have previously held this status, but my recent re-application was unfortunately declined. I would like to clarify that I am a faculty member, and the document I provided is an official Belgian administrative document called "SEC12". This is the standard legal proof of employment and engagement for teachers in my region. To address the issues raised in the rejection notice: School Name & Status: My school's full name is explicitly stated on the document. I am officially engaged as a faculty member (teacher), which corresponds to the "Faculty" status. Profile Name: I have updated/verified my GitHub profile and billing information to ensure my first and last names match the document exactly. Since the document is an official Belgian administrative form, I understand the automated system might have difficulties parsing it. I am ready to provide a side-by-side photo of the original SEC12 document along with an English translation of the key terms (School Name, My Name, Faculty Status, and Dates) if needed. You have to use a combination of tools, I suggest Camoufox (https://github.com/daijro/camoufox), along with a good VPN like Proton with Stealth Mode enabled. When Github verifies location, it checks what the browser says your location is against your IP. Those won't match unless using both. When I signed up, I told it that I was a off campus and had no issues. Unfortunately, it's 100% automated and trying to find Github is almost impossible. They clearly state that you are not able to contact anyone or open a support ticket. |

You need to make aws account with a credit card and then you get 200$ in credits on aws to use on selected products there you can pick bedrock and host Claude code there |

You Guys have done a very good thing , if you promise to give access to more and more students this is a necessary decision, however if you took something from students you should provide, some open source models for us , like kimi or deepseek something and others from Hugging face or something else |

@martinwoodward Please reconsider this change. Many students relied specifically on models like Sonnet and Opus for studying, research, and solving complex programming problems. These models were the reason Copilot was so helpful for us. Without them, Copilot becomes far less useful for academic work. Most students cannot afford paid plans, so this change does not push us to upgrade it only pushes us away from using Copilot. We respectfully ask you to restore at least limited access to these models for students. |

@ghaif You have to understand there are verified educators here who are saying this. the fre eplan runs out the moment you graduate so I think its justified, plus there are so many more solutions like more rate limiting or day wise limiting or making the requests 10x instead of 1 x or 3x but gatekeeping the models, that just shows no cinsideration. We have to also remember that Microsoft & Github ensure that these same students who eventually join / start ocmpanies will take the familiarity of these tools with them. |

it's not being greedy, it's about betraying us with no notice. Look at the recent changes made to Scratch. They changed their ToS to something very anti-user friendly and terrible. Scratch is completely free though, so we shouldn't be mad about something that's free, right? Is that what you're saying? Your family didn't have to raise you. They didn't have to feed you or care for you. So if your family stopped helping you ever at all without any notice, would you be sad? |

You're right.. maybe he is a lifelong learner. But so are we 😭😭 I was grinding every day, actually learning and trying to build real stuff. And I really need you to bring back Claude Opus! Force tighter limits, cap the PRUs at 100/month, whatever.. just please don't take it away completely 🙏😭 |

The new 200 AI credit limit (that is $2.00 worth of paid requests) for students is ridiculous, it takes about three to five prompts to use the entire credit with no model available for free to continue. I'm not even sure to understand what the difference between the student and free plan is at this point. |

No, bro. You don't really need to be simping for Microsoft, you're better than that. They said something when they offered the deal. Now they're unilaterally changing their conditions. The plan is absolutely useless now and Microsoft should get some pressure to stick to its initial words. |

@pcabram - $2 is better than nothing. Though as a student, this taught me that I'd be unwilling to pay for the service. If I run out of my $2 monthly allotment in 5 prompts over a single hour of usage using the cheapest model available (around 10 minutes agent run time), then a $10 subscription ($15 credit) would last maybe a day of use at most, and that's only if using the lowest tier models. Regarding my comment about free services: Honestly, I felt more productive and had a better understanding of the code when I was prompting and copy-pasting, inefficient as it is. Yes, agentic does spit out more complete solutions much quicker, but then you have to go through and digest it (unless you don't review it). By 'free' I was saying just the basic accounts on ChatGPT and Claude, I haven't used others. Agentic is banned at work, unless it was through github website. (It literally wouldn't run in VS or VsCode), but I used it a few times on my home pc for personal projects and it was cool, but id still rather it run contained and not on my pc. |

My copilot student is now showing 200 free ai credit which is going to be expired in 1 month? is it the real change about which they are talking that they are giving some allowance on using ai? or with github student developer pack I will have to again unlock the copilot pro? |

I only used it for autocomplete, and I assumed they would take that away from us or neuter it, so I have managed to get a local LLM to do effectively the same thing. The number of potential customers they have lost from this is kinda funny. |

That’s why we provide students with free access to the GitHub Student Developer Pack, run the Campus Experts program to help student leaders build tech communities, and partner with Major League Hacking (MLH) and Hack Club to support student hackathons and youth-led coding communities. It’s also why we offer verified students free access to GitHub Copilot—today, nearly two million students are using it to build, learn, and explore new ideas.
Copilot is evolving quickly, with new capabilities, models, and experiences shipping fast. As Copilot evolves and the student community continues to grow, we need to make some adjustments to ensure we can provide sustainable, long-term GitHub Copilot access to students worldwide.
Our commitment to providing free access to GitHub Copilot for verified students is not changing. What is changing is how Copilot is packaged and managed for students.
What this means for you
Starting today, March 12, 2026, your complimentary Copilot access will be managed under a new GitHub Copilot Student plan, alongside your existing GitHub Education benefits. Your academic verification status will not change, and there is nothing you need to do to continue using Copilot. You will see that you are on the GitHub Copilot Student plan in the UI, and your existing premium request unit (PRU) entitlements will remain unchanged.
As part of this transition, however, some premium models, including GPT-5.3-Codex, GPT-5.4, and Claude Opus and Sonnet models, will no longer be available for self-selection under the GitHub Copilot Student Plan. We know this will be disappointing, but we’re making this change so we can keep Copilot free and accessible for millions of students around the world.
That said, through Auto mode, you'll continue to have access to a powerful set of models from providers such as OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google. We'll keep adding new models and expanding the intelligence in Auto mode that helps match the right model to your task and workflow. We support a global community of students across thousands of universities and dozens of time zones, so we’re being intentional about how we roll out changes. Over the coming weeks, we will be making additional adjustments to available models or usage limits on certain features — the specifics of which we'll be testing with your feedback.
We want your input
Your experience matters to us, and your feedback will directly shape how this plan evolves. Leave a comment below, what's working for you, what gets in the way, and what you need most. We will also be continuing to host 1:1 conversations with students, educators, and Campus Experts, and using insights from our recent November 2025 student survey to help inform what's next.
GitHub's investment in students is not slowing down. We are committed to ensuring that Copilot remains a powerful, free tool for verified students, and we will continue to improve and expand the student experience over time.

Update March 13: We've now added the option so folks can upgrade from your GitHub Copilot Student plan to a paid GitHub Copilot Pro or GitHub Copilot Pro+ plan if you want to, while retaining the rest of your GitHub Student Pack benefits.
Update April 27: As part of these reliability updates, GPT-5.3-Codex has been removed from the model picker for the Copilot Student plan. The model will still be available to Copilot Student users via auto model selection.
Update June 24th: Copilot Free and Student plans will now use Copilot auto model selection as the default and only model selection experience. Auto dynamically selects the best model for each task, removing the need for manual choice. Auto provides access to models across multiple model families, subject to plan restrictions. For more information, see our documentation on supported models in auto mode.
As part of this simplification, we are also retiring the (Preview) label from Microsoft-released models. With Copilot auto model selection managing model routing and continuous improvements happening behind the scenes, these labels are no longer needed to guide user decisions.
